Using a MIDI harmoniser, he’s able to play chords in real time – essentially fulfilling the role of piano or guitar in a jazz trio. His approach has resonated widely online, with performances capturing attention across the jazz community and beyond. Drawing on influences from Miles Davis and Tom Harrell, Hogben is opening up fresh possibilities for what a trumpet can be in jazz.
